About the Taiwan Program Kwoh-Ting Li Visiting Fellowship
The Taiwan Program at Stanford’s Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) offers the Kwoh-Ting Li Visiting Fellowship to mid-career and senior scholars in Taiwan studies. The fellowship provides an opportunity to conduct research, write, participate in seminars, or teach a course on contemporary Taiwan. The fellowship supports research on issues related to Taiwan’s economy, society, demography, environment, technology, and other areas of contemporary Taiwan studies.
The Kwoh-Ting Li Visiting Fellow will work collaboratively with APARC faculty and researchers, Stanford faculty, and students to research how Taiwan can respond to the challenges and opportunities of economic, social, technological, environmental, and institutional adaptation in the coming decades. Research may draw on a range of disciplines, including the social sciences, public policy, and business. Applicants must demonstrate the potential to contribute meaningfully to the intellectual community of Taiwan Studies.
Eligibility
This mid-career/senior visiting fellowship is open to:
- Mid-career or senior scholars with research expertise in Taiwan studies.
- Professionals with a PhD or a substantial record of professional achievement related to contemporary Taiwan.
Applicants must be visiting from and affiliated with an outside institution or organization and must demonstrate proficiency in English.
Preference is given to professionals with strong research and publication records. Fellows are selected based on their prior professional achievements as well as the quality and potential impact of their proposed research and publication plans.
Fellowship Terms and Expectations
The appointment begins in autumn quarter 2027 and runs for one academic year. The visiting fellow will receive a $30,000 supplementary stipend and is expected to secure additional financial support through an external fellowship or other funding sources.
Visiting fellows are expected to:
- Remain in residence at Stanford for the duration of the appointment
- Participate actively in APARC activities throughout the academic year
- Meet with collaborators and relevant stakeholders as needed
- Contribute to programmatic activities, including colloquia and the annual conference
- Engage in research collaboration and other activities within the Stanford community
Additional Benefits
The fellowship provides access to Stanford research facilities and the opportunity to audit relevant University courses without tuition, subject to the instructor’s approval. Fellows may also participate in events organized by the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and other Stanford programs and centers.
